CANON- Production diary

 Logistical detail

Once i got permissions from the owners of the land of Seaburn beach on the 25th February, i went down to the facility one day later to film on Sunday 26th February. This was a most suitable date with it being on the weekend since i was free to film. I decided to film on The nighttime as that was the setting in which i planned my shot. I wanted to wait until the moon just starting to rise as for one of my shots i wanted the moon to just be reflecting off the land so there was a shine and glisten from the sea which would lighten up the scenery and make the poster interesting to look at. I didn't need to organise travel as it was just a ten minute walk away from my home.

I made sure i came prepared for filming days by making note of what equipment i needed to bring with me on the day of shooting. The only eqquipment I needed was my phone to take the images with. This is because it is small and convenient for the occasion. Also I am using an iPhone 11 which is fairly modern and still produces exceptionally good high quality images, especially with the night mode feature which brightens up dark images by improving the lighting so the look way more appealing and visible. Also it has many zoom and focus options, and since i wasn't making a video i didn't need any additional accessories like a dolly and tripod to make the camera still. So it only made it easier to use a phone as I had everything i needed to produce the images i wanted. Overall this made it easier to use a camera rather than a phone as i was getting the same quality image from my phone as i would from a camera as it would help me get the right angle shot size and perfect lighting settings with the phones night mode to brighten up the image more than it looks in real life while still maintaining the realistic aesthetic. This makes the shot look very appealing.

Mis en scene

These shots i will be taken at night in order to get the right effect with the lighting because i want the light from the moon and i want the streetlights to brighten up the darker atmosphere. The shots will be taken at moonrise for a few reasons, one because I plan for a shot to have the moonlight to shine off the sea and land which will help lighten up the sky. Also if i do it at moonrise, you will still have the very last bit of daylight at the bottom of the sky so there will be a transition in the shades of blue in the shot with it being darker at the top and lighter at the bottom. There won't be any people in these shots because i want to capture the scenery and not the people in it otherwise that would change the focus of the advert as i want to show a eye catching colourful image to grasp the audiences attention to teach the what the can produce with Canon products. As this add is trying to promote Canon products, not tell a story. These will be very wide distant shots as well as i want to show a lot in the distance as the camera focuses what is along the horizon to show the beautiful scenery. By shooting in the night, this allows me to add bright coloured text to contrast with the dark background in order to make it pop to gain the audiences attention to make them way attention to look at it and want to buy the magazine and look further into Canon products.

Controlling production

In order to plan ahead and control the production so i knew who was going to be involved in production i filled out a personnel list. I added my name first as i was the main director of the project. After giving it some thought i was going to get more people but i thought it wasn't necessary because i am only taking still images, and there isn't anyone in my shot. So i decided to just work on my own as it was most beneficial to get things done rather than wasting time organising to meet people at a certain time, i can just make the most out of my time by doing it on my own.

In order to efficiently plan out my time and make the most of my time, i decided to create a schedule to plan ahead what i am doing and when. This is to ensure that i was being productive with my time and i knew what i was doing when i get there. This is to make sure i get done what i plan to do and that i don't waste any time so i can get to making the product. This is just a prediction of how long i think everything will take so i can be a bit lenient if some things get done quicker or some things take longer. but it is good to plan ahead so i know that everything i want to get done gets done and i don't forget to do something.

Risks during production

Once i checked out the facility i created some Risk assessment forms to ensure the health and saftey side of things were going to be okay during production and that i wouldn't get hurt or harmed. It was important to consider the most and least likely risks weather they were minor or major threats as it is important to take probations. and if any of these things were to happen i could prepare ahead of time to ensure i was doing my best to prevent them from happening. The main most likely risks are poor weather or tripping hazards. To provent these from affecting me i decided to film on Sunday the 26th February as that had decent weather for the time which i was filming. As for trip hazards I will check out the surrounding are before i start to film to ensure i won't trip over anything.
Lone working is something that will affect me as there isn't anyone else within my cast and crew as it isn't required to have anyone else involved in the project. This isnt an issuer that will negatively impact production as it won't take me long to film

Behind the Scenes

Here I was trying to get a good shot for my magazine cover where in the plan, i wanted to get a shot of the beach, with some street lights at the side to lighten up the shot. This shot would also showcase the horizon to showcase a good view which will grasp the audiences attention and make it look appealing. This links back to the theme of journeys for the client. I try to do it from lower down but I then as you can see here, decided to go to the top of the pier so i could get a higher angle shot. This is because I want to experiment with various shot angles and different perspectives this idea could be captured from as i could get a better view of the horizon  from further up.

From here I saw an idea for a potential shot that wasn't apart of the initial plan but i thought i would try it. As you can see behind me, the waves are coming in, so from my perspectives there was lots of low down waves coming in from various distances, so I thought i could get a shot of all the waves coming in with some lights of the seafront and all the shops and restaurants in the background to lighten up the image. This shot ended up looking good. i don't know if I will use it in my final products but i will decide when i Organise my assets.

From here I am trying to do the same idea as the shot i explained in the previous behind the scenes shot, where i get a good shot of all the waves, but this time its from a lower angle. This angle worked better than the previous shot because since it's lower down, it's also closer so the camera focuses more on the waves, therefore making the quality of the image look better.

From here, I am trying to get the shot for my print advert by getting a shot of the moonlight reflecting off the sea. I start by trying to take the shot from up here so i can get a good angle where i get the sand in as well as the sea and further horizon. I then after this go down the steps to take this shot from a lower angle on the sand to try it out and see if it works.

Organising my footage

Once I took all of my Footage on the Day of production, I created a folder to place all my shots in to help further organise my assets to what shots I wanted to keep and which i didn't. It was also helpful so i didn't mix them up with other shots on my camera roll that weren't apart of the project. It easily allows me to access them when i want. After that i decided to click like on the images i liked the images i liked the most so a heart symbol will go on it as you can see. This allows me to eliminate the ones i don't want to use and Eventually round it down to the 2 shots i would use for my 2 products.

Shots from filming day

These are the shots I took from filming day. For 2 of the shots i tried to get the shot i wanted on my plan by getting the moon to reflect off the see in order to get a good lighting effect. In the end, it worked as it shows a light to dark transition in the sky and the sand which makes it very vibrant and i think the audience will like it once it has been edited into a final product. I was able to get 2 stunning shots the captured my idea the way i visioned it. For the other shots, it took a while to get it to work, i wanted to get a shot of the sea, but also capture the horizon in the background showing the sea front with all the lights from shops and restaurants reflecting off the sea to lighten up the dark atmosphere. This took a while due to the lighting around me being poor so i had to tackle this problem by moving to different points of the sea.
I thought the streetlights in the horizon of the shot will help lighten up the whole image and brighten the environment giving good lighting to the scenery. Some of the shots had good lighting and made the sand look a golden colour which is what i really liked from my footage and will probably use in the final product.

Shots I’m using in My Products.

These are the shots that i want to use for my final products as i personally think that these are the best 2 shots and work best for what i want to create with my adverts because the lighting angle and setting was captured perfectly and have lots of vibrant colours and I was able to achieve this through the lighting that i had as well as the night mode on my iphone.

This is the shot that i will use for my Print advert. This is because it has a crystal clear image of the sea, sky and sand and it all has a transition of light and dark colours. It is a dark image that is well lit up by the moon in the very centre. What i like about this is how the horizon line is in the very centre so you can see just as much land as you do sky. it uses a good array of colours that are well blended together thanks to the lighting. I think the audience will like this as it uses lots of colours which is something they said they wanted to see in the audience research. I think the moon reflecting off the land helps lighten the land up also. When i was taking this shot there wasn't much lighting around me which helped me get the effect i wanted with this shot. I also got it at night time so nobody was around to get in the way of the shot. Also the sea had just gone out so the sand was fresh and had no footprints in so it helps with the setting of the shot. This works well for a poster as you want the image to be attractive as there isn't much else in the image so you really want to show your audience something impressive which will grasp their attention and want to pay attention to the advert. I think this helps fit with journeys as my audience will associate a beach with a holiday or visiting a destination which is what they told me they associate with journeys in the audience research.

I like how this shot turned out due to the lighting. It brightens up the sky and looks brighter on the right and darker on the left which i like since the light is coming from the right. I like how the lighting caused the sand to look golden which really makes it look better than the pale colour it looked in the other shots. I think this image fits with journeys as a beach corresponds with a holiday which is what my audience think of when they hear journeys. I think this will therefore get the audiences attention while matching the clients requirements.
