CANON- Post Production- MAGAZINE COVER

Idea behind the shots

For the shots for the magazine cover, this one took longer to get than the one for the print advert. This was because it took many attempts to get the right angle and lighting. I wanted to capture the street lights in the background to lighten up the night sky. This will get the audience to focus their attention to the centre of the image as all the lights of the horizon will be coming from the horizon in the centre. Its similar to the effect i was getting with the moon in the print advert but doing it with streetlights in the magazine cover as i think it will be more vibrant to make them want to read it and learn more about Canon products.

Organisation

Instead of transferring the images to a computer i Thought it would be easier to store them on my phone since i am editing it using a editing app on my phone.

I created a folder to store all of my assets for the Canon project to make sure i didn't mix the up or lose them within all the other photos on my camera roll. This allowed me to quickly find them all in one place. To round it down from the many photos i had taken, i liked the photos i liked the most indicated by the heart logo to round it down to my favourites that i absolutely wanted to use in my advert.

Raw Footage

This is the footage that i took on filming day to use for the Magazine cover. Some of the shots had bad lighting which is why i had to keep retaking from different perspectives. Some of the shots also didn't feature many streetlights in the background so i couldn't get the effect i wanted as there was no light to brighten up the image so it just looked very dark and misty.

I like this shot as the sky reflects off the sea nicely but i couldn't get the right lighting for the sky and it looks too dark which takes away from the effect i want.

This shot worked better than the last one as its a lot more vibrant and colourful as there's alot more lights in the shot. I like the angle as you get a glimpse of the horizon which helps make this image look appealing to a young audience who might not have been here before which could represent a new journey.

\

I didn't plan to take this shot but i saw the opportunity to take this shot as there was some boats out at sea behind the rover pier which gave off some good lighting along the sea which reflected light into the sky making it a dark blue which really made the sky vibrant compared to previous shots. I don't think ill include this my product as it doesn't show any scenery of the land and also it is landscape not portrait so it wouldn't fit the clients requirements. But it was good to experiment with the shot and try it out to see how it worked.

I like this shot for the detail of the beach. But i didn't like how it worked out because no matter how many times i tried to take this exact shot from this spot the lighting ended up being poor and just looks dull and not as vibrant as the other shots.

Although its landscape i really like this shot because it captured the sea in good quality and shows detail in the lighting and the waves. This is helped by the high angle its taken from. There is lots of lights and colours in the scenery that bring this image to life.

This is my personal favourite shot out of them all as the angle is lower down so nothing gets in the way, it shows an even amount of land and sky, the lighting is perfect and vibrantly lightens up the atmosphere creating a very attractive image. I like how the sand went a gold colour due to the good lighting and how that makes the sky look brighter. There is also lots of streetlights i the horizon from the sea front which brings this image to life and makes it look colourful and appealing.

Editing/ Experimenting

First of all I wanted to add the canon logo to the top so when people see this in the shop they instantly know generally what brand or product line it is about. It helps to increase brand awareness for the client. I then back it up to a white boarder to help it vibrantly stand out. I took inspiration from previous Canon magazines as they have the title or logo on a white or black background so it helps it stand out, otherwise it would look apart of the image. I also inserted the caption of "capture your memories" in small lettering at the bottom as that is a small inspirational tagline that is meant to go with the advert. It's a play on of words as capturing is to do with taking photos and you create memories with photos. As a result i thought this best suited the product and the campaign. I inverted the colours for the subtitle so t stood out from the canon logo. I didn't want it to be as big and in your fave but i wanted it to be noticed.

After taking a bit of a look of previous Canon magazines and other magazines in general, i notices some of them had a coloured boarder around the outside which made the image stand out a whole lot more. This is something i wanted to use in my campaign so i added in a red square shape and layered it on the background of the whole thing.

I thought id add a picture of a Canon camera so the audience can see the product that is being advertised. This is so they can see the purpose of the advert. I backed it up by a bright red square so it stood out from the dark black sky. This will help it pop out so the audience look at the product.

I added a black boarder around the outside of the picture of the camera as i think it helped separate the camera image from the picture of the beach so they don't clash. I then added the title of the campaign, "Journeys" to the top left so it is clear and in your face. I stuck with the same font and colour as the print advert as i think it worked well and stood out so i wanted to do the same here as well. I didn't want to add a square around this one as i thought if it was apart of the image that it would stand out more so people associate the image with the word Journeys and link them together and then understand why the magazine and campaign is called Journeys.

When going through my shots i Thought it would be a shame to not use some of the other good shots, so i Thought i could make use of them. As when looking through other magazine covers they sometimes include other smaller images as well as the big image as the background. I think this helps show the audience all the amazing high quality images you could get if you owned a Canon camera and not just one. It helps to promote the product a bit more. These are bordered by a white square so it stands out and doesn't clash with the big background image otherwise they would be hard to see.
To go with it, I thought i would add some reasons to buy the Canon products by highlighting key features which make the images so good. This will wow the audience and impress them so they want a Canon camera. I thought the thin typewriter lettering fits in with the theme as Canon make printers and this is a magazine after all. i wanted it to be simple and readable so the audience understand it. It is not too much but it works and shows what Canon cameras can do. By putting headlines in red ad white just like the same colour scheme at the top with the Canon logo, it really helps it pop out from the background and makes the audience want to pay attention.

To finish off, i wanted to add some small less noticeable things that you would see in a magazine, such as the published date and issue number as well as the website info. So even if the audience don't want to buy a magazine for whatever reason as maybe reading isn't for them, at least they have the option to go on the official Canon website and check out them as a company and the products they have. I put the price in blue as even though it doesn't match the colour scheme, it is to stand out and inform they audience how much the magazine costs. Some Canon magazines are aimed at older audiences and can cost 7 or 8 pounds. For my campaign i am being considerate of the young audience who are less fortunate or maybe dont have much money or a job to get money, so therefore i am charging less and putting mine around half the price of regular Canon magazines.

Software and tools used

Along the bottom you see all the tools you have access to. The adjust tool lets you change the lighting and colour correction effects of the image. The looks tool adds different filters to adjust the image style or effect. The cut out tool lets you cut out certain aspects of an image like the background for example. Those were the main few tools i needed to use to edit my product

The software i used is an editing app on my phone called "photoshop mix" it is a very useful photo editing software and a great alternative for someone on a phone that can't edit on a computer all the time. It has most of the tools that you see on photoshop.

Along the side it allows me to organise my layers of my images in a certain order to get the result i want in my final product by letting me organise my images in the order i want.

Feedback
I created a Survey to ask my audience on what they think of my final product.

By asking them what they like about the advert this informs me about what i did well in informing a young audience about Canon products. It seems i used lots of colours and detailed images to gain their attention which is good as that will make them want to read more of the magazine to find out more.

This advert made everyone who took the survey feel more persuaded to buy Canon products. This is good as this informs me that i did a good job at getting the message across about Canon cameras and informing them of why they need to make the move to using a camera and not a phone.

100% of people who took this survey said they would pick up this magazine and find out more about Canon products. This lets me know that this grasped their attention and shows that i did a good job at making this eye catching enough to make them want to read on and find out more.

Reflection on Feedback
This feedback is useful as it lets me know that i did a good job at informing you people about Canon and their products in a short and sweet manner by getting the required information across without overwhelming them and making it too detailed. This shows me that i was persuasive as i have made my audience who previously mostly used phones and not cameras, want to start wanting to check out Canon products and see what products they make which will help the client Canon as it will help increase sales as more people will want to buy Canon products. This not only helps the audience but fits with the client help promoting their campaign and their products.
